how it works. this site has been rebuilt twice and repainted more often than that, and most of those looks only exist now as commits. every stop here is one of them, checked out, installed and shot at the same size, so the design is the only thing that changes between stops. the stops sit at even steps rather than at their dates, because a true time axis would crush v3 into its last few pixels. the ticks swell in a bell around the head the way the dock magnifies under a cursor, measured in pixels so the swell is the same size on a phone as on a desktop. the change of picture is the part that matters, and it has no duration of its own. the picture is worked out from where the head is: halfway between two stops the older shot is half blurred and the newer one sits over it at half strength, a little short of full size and growing into place, so a slow drag holds the dissolve wherever you stop and a fast one smears through the stops like a motion blur. only the two shots either side of the head are ever painted. the idea came from raul dronca's scrubber through forty years of the mac folder icon.
